I am You

I Am You explores human transformation, identity, and the fluid boundaries between conditioned personas and authentic selfhood. The project investigates how individual character is shaped by environmental circumstance, social trends, family dynamics, and personal choices, while questioning the degree to which our emotional states and public identities are inherently fleeting. By examining the tension between performative self-presentation and underlying human essence, the work considers who we might become under altered circumstances or through alternative choices.

The project situates its inquiry within the cultural and spatial dynamics of contemporary urban life and digital culture. In environments such as New York City—where public life has long intersected with spectacle, self-branding, and hyper-individualism—the pressure toward curated self-presentation is especially pronounced. Amplified by social media platforms, influencer culture, and media-driven aesthetics, contemporary identity often tilts toward constructed external performance. While these identity performances can function as creative expressions, they can also cultivate social alienation, self-absorption, and a disconnect from shared human experience.

Originating in observations developed between 2019 and 2020, I Am You critically examines how social and cultural structures encourage individuals to wear distinct social masks, frequently obscuring deeper layers of consciousness.

This conceptual framework is balanced by an internal, contemplative perspective. Beginning around 2016–2017, the integration of meditative practice and intuitive mindfulness provided a conceptual counterpoint to the accelerated demands of urban self-presentation. This shift introduced an exploration of the “true self”—a grounded, mindful state of being that exists prior to social conditioning.

Drawing on psychological frameworks regarding the “public,” “private,” and “secret” selves, the work explores the creation of personal avatars and the transitory nature of emotional constructs. Identity formation is framed here not as a fixed destination reached in childhood, but as a continuous, malleable process across a lifespan. Engaging a narrative architecture of action, consequence, and divergent timelines—reminiscent of speculative structures like Run Lola Run—I Am You examines how minor variations in choice or environment can sculpt radically different personas. Ultimately, the work addresses the problematics that arise when these fluid constructs are taken too seriously: when society fixates on external masks, the grounded, authentic self is easily forgotten, masking the shared human essence beneath.
